Fieldwork in Silence - Presentation at conference in Toronto

On May 25, DISTRACT PhD student Malene Hornstrup Jespersen gave a presentation at  ICA Preconference: Key themes in digital disconnection research: Authenticity, wellness, datafication and power in Toronto.

The presented paper, Fieldwork in Silence: A Protocol for (Auto)ethnographic Research on Meta-attentional Practices, focused on a data collection experiment conducted at a digital detox and silent retreat in May 2022. The paper proposed a novel auto-ethnographic methodological framework for studying the first-person experience of attending and feeling distracted. The framework combines methods such as open-ended logbooks, self-assessment scales and non-digital trackers to gain insights into personal reflections, developments over time, and general trends in attention and distraction across individuals.
