The Paradox of Media (Un)Freedom in Greece: Quantitative vs. Qualitative Media Pluralism

The project aims to investigate the paradox of media (un)freedom in Greece. Greece is characterized by low ranking in global media freedom indexes despite having a seemingly diverse media landscape. The study explores the disparity between the large number of registered digital media platforms and the actual diversity of content and editorial independence, questioning whether the fragmented media system translates into a qualitative plurality of viewpoints.

The project maps the content of digital news media in Greece, assessing the extent of content diversity and how it reflects on media ownership patterns. It employs advanced data collection methods alongside novel measures of content plurality using state-of-the-art text as data approaches including recent advancements in machine learning and large language models.
