SODAS Data Discussion 3 (Spring 2025)

Copenhagen Center for Social Data Science (SODAS) aspirers to be a resource for all students and researchers at the Faculty of Social Sciences. We therefore invite researchers across the faculty to present ongoing research projects, project applications or just a loose idea that relates to the subject of social data science.
Two researchers will present their work. The rules are simple: Short research presentations of ten minutes are followed by twenty minutes of debate. No papers will be circulated beforehand, and the presentations cannot be longer than five slides.

Title: The Colors of Fashion
Abstract:
The fashion industry, a significant economic engine and cultural force, constantly evolves, reflecting broader societal shifts and technological progress. This talk presents a large-scale computational analysis exploring the dynamics of fashion trends over time. Leveraging a dataset of one million runway looks spanning from 1988 to 2025, we employ computer vision and natural language processing techniques to decompose designs into granular style elements or 'topics'. By analyzing the distribution, diversity (using metrics like Richness and Shannon Entropy), and novelty of these topics across collections and decades, we track how trends emerge, propagate, and fade. Our findings reveal patterns of innovation and influence, mapping the cultural evolution of fashion at both the brand and industry levels and identifying key drivers of stylistic change.
